Connecting the Enterprise with a Modern Integration Platform

An energy company replaced brittle point-to-point connections with a governed integration platform, improving data flow reliability and speeding new connections.

The challenge

Years of tactical integration had produced a web of point to point connections between systems. Each new interface added complexity, and a change in one system could ripple unpredictably into others.

This fragility slowed the delivery of new capabilities, because connecting a new application often meant untangling existing links first. There was little central visibility into how data moved across the enterprise.

Leadership wanted a governed integration platform that would make connections more reliable, give visibility into data flows and reduce the time needed to integrate new systems.

Technology landscape

A large number of point to point interfaces built over time with varied technologies and little consistent governance.

Limited central monitoring of integrations, so failures were often detected only when downstream processes broke.

A growing portfolio of cloud and on premises applications that needed to exchange data reliably.

Our approach

We designed an integration architecture based on reusable services and consistent patterns, with governance and monitoring built in, to replace the ad hoc point to point approach.

We prioritized the highest risk and highest value interfaces for migration to the new platform, establishing patterns that subsequent integrations could reuse.

We defined standards and reusable components so new connections could be delivered faster and maintained more consistently over time.

Implementation

We stood up the integration platform with shared services for common patterns, centralized monitoring and clear governance, then migrated priority interfaces onto it in a planned sequence.

We replaced brittle connections with managed, reusable integrations, validating each migration carefully to avoid disrupting the processes that depended on the data flows.

We established monitoring and alerting across the integrations and trained internal teams on the platform and its standards so they could extend it confidently.

Outcomes

  • Governed, reusable integrations improved the reliability of data flows and reduced the ripple effects that changes had previously caused.
  • Centralized monitoring gave teams visibility into how data moved across the enterprise and earlier detection of issues.
  • Reusable patterns shortened the effort to connect new systems, so delivery of new capabilities was less often held back by integration work.
  • Clear standards made the integration estate easier to maintain and reason about as the application portfolio grew.
